At Q's request, here's a poll.

Annoying? Difficult to read?
Easy to read? Quick and simple?

You decide.

OO did I , well Im sure 1 mustnt take all the credit.

1st off a few lil comments on this.

The question, isnt it a bit biased? Also implies an opinon of mine ( which may or may not be accurate) and  which certainly shouldnt be there to lead. I believe my suggestion stemmed from a possible solution to other peoples concerns ( and not on this forum, tho I may be wrong, I often am).

Wouldnt it have been better just to have had 'Text speak, what do you think?'? Followed by your two ( or is it four) questions. However, that still leaves out the third way of ' Are you really  bothered? Can peeps do what they want?'.

I would say I couldnt give a definative answer. 'LOL' - text speak and I hate it. Ash ,you dont like Text speak but use this term. 'Brits' is now in the dictionary  but its a word i hate. Gets difficult dont it  Smiley

Why and where is txtspeak used. Well for a start not normally for very important things , where people want to get over a message. Its certainly not needed as we have a full keyboard (OK a few may use access via their 'phones from time to time).  So might be an idea for people to say why they use txt speak or why they do not.

Before we do that::

Text speak drives me insane, moreso when I'm reading it on a computer screen than if I were receiving a text message. On a phone, it's understandable - you only have a set number of characters per message, so you have to restrict yourself to save credit, plus as a general rule the 'keyboard' (?) layout is a pain and difficult for some to use (referring mostly to generic phone keypads, none of this fancy-schmancy touch-screen QWERTY keyboard).

On a computer, with a full keyboard in front of you, there's little excuse besides sheer laziness. I can understand the odd acronym here and there, sure (FYI, BRB, LOL, IMO, TL;DR et al); but frankly, if you can't even bother to type in reasonable English (I'll forgive this for people whose foremost language isn't English, but more often than not their English is better than ours!) then <insert violent outburst here>. Heck, I don't even mind about punctuation so much, though spacing is important (no walls of text here!)

typn lyk dis jst tks 4va 2 trnslt, n cn tk lngr 2 typ evn den reel nglsh
(Typing like this just takes forever to translate, and can take longer to type than real English - or so I found, as I had to make a concentrated effort to look for the keys, and I can pretty much touch-type normally... )

So yeah. Too much 'txt spk' can often turn a quick skim of a thread or post into a 5-minute translation session, which gets very boring very quickly, and helps put users off the thread in question.

LOL did not originate with textspeak, it came from internet gaming, along with things like WTF, FTW and PWNED. I understand the use of these in-game as you need to type messages quickly rather than spend ages writing properly only to be shot in the face by a shotgun-wielding 13 year-old.

Pardon?

I don't really like it, as I can type faster than I write there is no use for it.
It's fine for texting as it is much slower.
